Well, November sure did get away from me! Between the international travel, Thanksgiving, and a big essay for one of my classes, I have not been particularly on top of it with this newsletter, and to round it off, I developed a cold the other night. But it is December now, which means it is cozy season, which means that in treating my cold with pajamas and my bed and books and lots of tea, I am actually just fitting into the culture. December is a time for comfort reads-- between the holidays and my birthday being right after New Year’s, now is the time when I’m thinking about what books I’d like to receive as gifts, and that means returning to the books I love, seeking comfort in the familiar, before I treat myself to the unexpected.
So, the topic of this open thread is: What is your comfort read? It doesn’t have to be Mitford-related, though mine is-- surprise! I am never not on the verge of or in the middle of rereading The Pursuit of Love.
But there are other books that can serve this function for me: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, even after all this time,is often at the top of the pile during those dead weeks between the end of the semester and the start of the new one; sometimes Howards End makes it in there; The Lion in Winter (the play) is usually required reading before my annual Christmas Day rewatch of the 1968 movie.
What do you read at this time of year? What makes you feel like you are doing the right kind of wintertime coziness, the coziness that is demanded by the dark days and biting wind and enforced cheer?
